Our selection of kid’s sunglasses is designed specifically to appeal to children (so they actually want to wear them!) and, most importantly provide maximum UV protection.
Children’s eyes are delicate
You will already smoother them in sunscreen, insist on that sunhat but have you remembered their sunglasses?
Our eyes are ten times more sensitive to ultraviolet (UV) light than our skin and our children’s eyes are at the greatest risk of UV damage. This is because the lens in a child’s eye is clearer and the pupil is larger which means that up to 70 per cent more UV light reaches their retina than in an adult’s eye causing potentially irreversible damage.
Combined with the disproportionate amount of time children spend playing outdoors, research shows that, by the age of 18, children will have already absorbed 80 per cent of their lifetime exposure to UV light.
It’s never too early for kids to protect their eyes when playing outdoors.
The dangers of UV radiation
Cumulative exposure to UV radiation has been linked to the development of cataracts, macular degeneration and other eye conditions. Repeated exposure to sunlight can also increase your risk of cancer of the eyelid and the skin surrounding the eye.
Also, be aware that your child’s exposure to UV rays increases at high altitudes and where light is reflected more, such as when near snow or water. Protection is especially important for kids in these situations.
Sun protection at Simmons
We offer a great range of affordable kid’s sunglasses. However, we can also protect their eyes by adding a UV coating on their everyday glasses, by using photochromic lenses (which darken in sunlight) or by fitting contact lenses.
At Simmons Optometrists we can offer you and your family the best advice on UV protection.
Not only do all our sunglasses conform to British and European Standards for blocking UV radiation, but equally importantly we make sure that they fit correctly and comfortably to provide maximum protection. In addition, most of our sunglasses can be fitted with prescription lenses if required.
